CHANGE IN VENUE NOTICE
The Vascular Biology Satellite Symposium scheduled at Chatham Bars Inn on Cape Cod, June 12 – 13, 2009 has been moved to the Boston Copley Marriott. The original program schedule of the meeting remains the same.
We hope that this move will allow more scientists to participate at a lower cost for both housing and travel. We feel this will particularly benefit the many physicians and researchers located in the Boston area, especially those in the early stages of their careers.
We appreciate your understanding.
Respectfully,
ISA Satellite Organizers

Chairpersons: M Gimbrone, Jr. (USA), P Libby (USA)
Scope of the Program
While much progress has been made in our understanding of the process known as atherosclerosis which clogs coronary arteries, much remains to be learned about the development of such lesions and what causes them to rupture and occlude the artery causing a heart. Statins, drugs which reduce the levels of low density lipoproteins in the blood stream and limit inflammation can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease. We are beginning to understand some of the mechanisms whereby these agents have their beneficial effects directly in the artery wall. This satellite symposium will address the need to understand how to stabilize existing plaque in the artery wall to prevent further disease in subjects who already have coronary artery disease; the need to know how to protect the artery wall from build up of atherosclerosis, as well as to understand the interactions of plasma lipoproteins with the artery wall; the need to elucidate the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in the development of atherosclerosis, as well as the mechanisms for clot formation in arteries already affected by fatty plaque, and the need for better ways to image disease within the artery and ways to determine which plaques are vulnerable to rupture and clot formation.
Goals and Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Understand how atherosclerosis develops in the artery, and how one can protect individuals from this process;
- Demonstrate increased knowledge with regard to how plasma lipoproteins, specifically triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, low density lipoproteins, and high density lipoproteins, underact with the artery wall;
- Be able to assess the role of oxidation in the development of atherosclerosis; and
- Understand the mechanisms of clot formation in atherosclerotic plaques, as well as the methods for imaging atherosclerosis and vulnerable plaques in the artery.

Scope of the Program
Dietary and lifestyle changes are the primary treatment modality for cardiovascular risk reduction, through both LDL-C lowering and management of the metabolic syndrome. The recent EUROACTION program, developed by the European Society of Cardiology, demonstrates that a multidisciplinary, family-based preventive cardiology approach can significantly improve lifestyle and metabolic risk factors for cardiovascular disease in both a hospital and general practice setting. There is a need for similar programs and strategies around the world that can increase patient awareness and promote lasting dietary and lifestyle changes. Physician surveys confirm this need for more consistent and effective counseling of patients about diet, exercise, and smoking cessation, particularly in routine. This satellite symposium will contribute to the ongoing discussion on this topic by providing physicians, other health care providers, and scientists with an update on cutting-edge issues in nutrition and lifestyle research, with the goal of improving patient care and clinical outcomes. This satellite symposium will also address the effect of dietary composition and of specific nutrients/supplements on cardiovascular risk, in order to aid physicians in making informed decisions regarding counseling, prevention, and treatment.
Goals and Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate increased knowledge of various strategies for dietary modification in the reduction of cardiovascular risk;
- Appraise the safety and efficacy of various dietary plans, nutrients, and supplements in terms of cardiovascular risk reduction, in order to guide patients to make appropriate dietary choices; and
- Discuss current cutting-edge issues in the field of nutrition and lifestyle research with colleagues.
